One Man Killed, Another Injured in Tutu Shooting

One man was killed and a second injured in a shooting Thursday night at the Tutu Housing Community.

The V.I. Police identified the murder victim as 30-year-old Paul Smith, a Tutu resident. It was the seventh homicide on St. Thomas since beginning the new year, the eighth in the territory.

According to the police report, officers were dispatched when a woman called 911 at 10:47 p.m. to say that a man may have been shot outside her apartment in the housing community. At the scene the officers found two victims, who were transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center.

At the hospital Smith succumbed to his injuries. The second victim, whose name was not released by the police, was treated for a gunshot wound to his upper body.

The Major Crime Unit is investigating the incident. Police urged anyone with information to contact the VIPD at 340-774-2211, Major Crime at 340-715-5542, the 911 emergency call center, or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477.
