Central H.S. Hosts Kai A. Schjang Varsity Volleyball Tournament

Complex vs. Good Hope Country DayThe St. Croix Central High School’s 22nd Annual Kai A. Schjang Varsity Volleyball Tournament was held at the Ronald Charles Basketball Arena on Oct. 20-23. The action-packed weekend included participation from both private and public school teams across the territory. St. Croix Educational Complex’s male division won 1st place and St. Thomas’ Antilles School won in the female division.

Volleyball Champions -- Female Division winners are the Antilles Lady HurricanesIn the female division, the top four finishers at the end of the preliminary games were Antilles School Lady Hurricanes, Charlotte Amalie High School Lady Hawks, Educational Complex Barracudas and Central High Lady Caribs. In the semi-finals, the Lady Hawks defeated the Lady Caribs straight sets with scores of 27-25 and 25-14. In the other semi-final game the Lady Hurricanes defeated the Lady Barracudas in 2 out of 3 sets with scores of 25-19, 21-25 and 15-9.

In the female Bronze Medal game, the Lady Barracudas defeated the Lady Caribs in two out of three sets with scores of 25-16, 14-25 and 15-11. In the Championship match, the Lady Hurricanes, coached by Keith Nicholson, defeated the Lady Hawks in three out of four sets with scores of 25-21, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-13. The top scorer for Lady Hurricanes was Tsamara Roberts with 22 points and 20 spikes. For the Lady Hawks, Amani Richardson had 12 points and 10 spikes.

In the semi-finals, the Barracudas defeated the Hurricanes in two out of three sets with scores of 15-25, 25-20 and 15-11. In the other semi-final game, the Panthers defeated the Caribs in two out of three sets with scores of 25-22, 18-22 and 15-13. In the male Bronze Medal match, the Caribs defeated the Hurricanes in two straight sets with scores of 25-15 and 25-20.

 

Tournament namesake Kai Schjang with Educational Complex coach Ophelia JacksonIn the Championship match, the Barracudas, coached by Ophelia Jackson, defeated the Hurricanes in two out of three sets with scores of 21-25, 25-1 three straight sets with scores of 27-25, 25-21 and 25-22. The top scorer for the Barracudas was Jahmari Solomon with 18 points and Gyrez Gaspard, who had 15 spikes each. For the Panthers, Hasani Lynch had 14 points and Shmuel Williams had 10 spikes.

The Female Most Valuable Player was Tsamara Roberts; the Male Most Valuable Player was Gyrez Gaspard.
