St. Thomas Food Tours Introduces Visitors to Homemade Delights

St. Thomas Food Tours, the premier cultural food tour on the island, is conducting pre-season tours for the general public. Started by local Charlotte Amalie High School and UVI graduate Aslin Leger, St. Thomas Food Tours introduces visitors to the rich culture and unique food of the Virgin Islands. Integrating history with local food, the tour takes tourists down St. Thomas’s Main Street guided by locals, as well as Leger herself. Visitors can sample such favorite local dishes as saltfish, stuffing, fungi and oxtail.
Also part of the food tour, Leger and her team take visitors for fraco, the frozen treat loved by young and old alike. Like many Virgin Islanders, Leger fondly remembers “…asking my father to stop at fraco vans to get one, always with a little milk on top.”
St. Thomas is finally receiving recognition for its delicious and unique cuisine, and Leger’s goal is to highlight the island’s gastronomy. “The idea behind St. Thomas Food Tours came from my travels. I noticed other places offered food tours, and St. Thomas didn’t have one. I said why not? We have the history and we surely have the food. It’s the perfect recipe for a fantastic food tour.”
An added bonus for real foodies, Leger has partnered with a local downtown restaurant to offer a cooking class for groups where guests can make their own johnny cakes and saltfish — ideal for birthday parties, travel groups or work outings. The cooking class provides visitors with the opportunity to see how these two popular local dishes are made with a unique, hands-on experience.
Pre-season tours were met with great success, and customers enjoyed the diverse selection of foods they sampled while learning about the history of St. Thomas.
According to Shane Benjamin, “The tour guide gave us lots of history. I enjoyed the beautiful walk and the food was awesome.”
