Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp signed a proclamation marking Nov. 1 as D. Hamilton Jackson Day, also known as “Liberty Day” or “Bull and Bread Day,” and granting administrative leave to all government employees the following Monday, Nov. 2, Government House announced Saturday.
The holiday falls each year on Nov. 1, but this year that day falls on a Sunday. Under Virgin Islands law, when a holiday falls on a Sunday, the governor can grant administrative leave on the following Monday in commemoration of the holiday.
“D. Hamilton Jackson Day provides the Territory with an opportunity to celebrate and honor contributions and accomplishments of this fine Virgin Islander and to preserve the history of the Virgin Islands and specifically St. Croix,” Mapp said.
The governor’s proclamation [See it here] grants administrative leave to all executive branch employees from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 2.
The proclamation was signed Thursday and announced Saturday.
