St. Croix Runners Go Fort-To-Fort for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The 30th Annual Martin Luther King Fort-To-Fort 15.5 Mile (25K) Memorial Run runners before the race.A group of dedicated runners participated in The 30th Annual Martin Luther King Fort-To-Fort 15.5 Mile (25K) Memorial Run on Sunday morning on St. Croix, according to a press release issued by The Virgin Islands Pace Runners. The 5 a.m. start provided the conditions conducive to long distance running in the sub-tropics; the mid-island route offered the terrain least challenging yet equally scenic as any non-seaside St. Croix venue to be found.
The runners, some who have been loyal to the cause of this challenging non-competitive run for years, included: Juan Robles, V.I. Half-Marathon Champion; Randall Neilsen, Superior Court Marshall; Ivan Espinosa, Paralympics hopeful; Bridget Klein V.I. Marathon Champion, Fred Smith; Mike Klein, V.I. Ultra Distance Champion; Troy Holloway, V.I. Ultra competitor; Keziah Sullivan, native Kenyan; Scott Fricks, V.I. Triathlon Federation Champion; Craig Daniels, Elena Christian Jr. High School teacher; Laverne Fredericks, multi endurance sport competitor; Ana Gutierrez, V.I. Olympic Marathoner; Wayne Nichols multi endurance sport competitor; Ray Lutz, power walker; and Theresa Harper, multi endurance sport competitor. All the runners who completed the distance did so in under three hours.

1] This annual event has utilized the same route for its 30-year history.
2] Each participant earned an event certificate which reads: This is in recognition of your participation in the 30th Annual Martin Luther King 25K Memorial Run. King was born Jan. 15, 1929, Atlanta, Ga., U.S. and died April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tenn.; he was an eloquent black Baptist minister, who led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968.
His leadership was fundamental to that movement’s success in ending the legal
segregation of blacks in the South and other portions of the United States.
He was an advocate of peaceful resolution the world over.
