Certified Fiber Optic Technician/Installer Training Program Begins

Netwave Unlimited Services (“NETWAVE”) started its Certified Fiber Optic Technician/Installer Training Program at the Cardiac Center through the Virgin Islands Department of Labor and the V.I. Workforce Investment Board on March 3. Participants will learn to install, maintain and repair fiber optic lines, and will graduate as certified fiber optic technicians/installers. Additional classes will be offered. Evening classes are available.
“As we begin to see a diversification in the skills, training and talents demanded, the department welcomes the offerings of Netwave Unlimited to the territory,” said Commissioner Albert Bryan Jr., V.I. Department of Labor (DOL).
No prior experience with technology is necessary, and the four week class is free for applicants who meet the eligibility requirements of the DOL. Several courses on St. Croix will be offered. St. Thomas classes will be announced in April 2014. Call the V.I. DOL at 773-1994 to enroll.
“This course is an opportunity for Virgin Islanders with no prior experience to train for a new career in fiber optics. Our economy is rapidly changing, and the technology sector is one of the primary fields with an immeasurable potential for growth in our islands. The Virgin Islands has already invested in the fiber optic infrastructure — the construction in our streets and on our utility lines over the past year laid the groundwork for fiber optic expansion into homes and businesses. This course is a ground floor opportunity for Virgin Islanders of all ages, experiences and skill sets to participate in this development, be competitive and work-ready. As the technology sector grows in the Virgin Islands, this course in fiber optics networking gives our community an opportunity to grow with it,” said Semaj Johnson, Netwave’s director of community development and public relations.
No prior experience is necessary. For information about the training and class start dates, contact the V.I. Department of Labor at 773-1994 or Netwave at 514-0956.
