V.I. Medicare Office Ranked Ninth Nationally

The Virgin Islands State Health Insurance Program is once again the recipient of a performance award from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is currently rated ninth in the nation, according to the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

The territory beat out larger program jurisdictions like Chicago and New York in overall performance.

VISHIP is a program federally funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and locally administered by the Lieutenant Governor’s Office.

Beverly Joseph, the program’s acting director, attributed the award to the outstanding efforts of the small, but dedicated staff to reach and serve the Medicare eligible population. “I am proud that the service we provide to our customers has been recognized by the CMS,” she said in a released statement. “Through client contacts at our offices and community outreach, we have been able to reach and serve our customers.”

She said they were especially proud that the office served more than 600 Virgin Islanders during its 2013 open enrollment period and “helped them to become better educated about the benefits available to them through Medicare.”

VISHIP’s performance was measured by community outreach, the number of persons seen or helped, and the Medicare areas covered by the agency.

VI SHIP has received this performance award on several other occasions, including in 2012, 2009, 2008 and two prior years. (See related links below)
