Schjang’s Slam Sinks Enforcers

Kai Schjang blasted a grand slam over the right centerfield fence Tuesday night to power the National Guard Hummers over the Enforcers, 20-18, in Bob Owens Slow-pitch softball action at the D.C. Canegata ballpark. The Hummers still trailed 18-15 entering the top of the seventh but rallied for five runs to pull out the victory.

The Enforcers got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run homerun by Dave Wentz after the Hummers came up empty in the top of the inning.

The Hummers responded with five runs in the top of the second to take a 5-2 lead. They scored five runs on a two-run single by Arthur Canaii, RBI singles by Stanley Jones and Freddie Pimentel, and two bases on walks. The Enforcers had no answer in their half of the inning.

The Hummers extended their lead to 7-2 in the top of the third on David Clark’s two-run dinger; however, the Enforcers were able to answer with four runs in the bottom of the inning on Wentz’s second two-run blast, an RBI single by Cory Moore and a Hummers error to trail by just one at the end of three completed innings at 7-6.

The Enforcers came up with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead at 8-7 after the Hummers came up empty in the top of the inning.

That lead did not last long as the Hummers got a three-run blast from Steve Blake and a solo shot from Ovideo Aquino, momentarily taking the lead at 11-8, top of the fifth. The Enforcers were equal to the task, however, and rallied for four runs as well to lead 12-11 at the end of five innings.

The Hummers, in what was now a seesaw contest, came back to take the lead again on Kelvin Boscan three-run home run and Schjang’s RBI single, putting it at 15-12 in the top of the sixth.

But, as expected, back came the Enforcers to retake the lead at 17-15 with five runs in the bottom of the inning on a three-run homer by Danny Rodriquez, an RBI single by Wentz and an RBI double by Clayton Pollock.

The Hummers would take the lead for good, however, in the top of the seventh at 20-17 on Schjang’s grand slam and Canaii’s RBI single as the Enforcer could only muster one unearned run in the bottom of the inning to lose 20-18.

Roy Vialet got the win on the hill for the Hummers, while Javier Carpio got the loss.

Top batters for the winners were Schjang (3 for 5 with a homerun and five RBIs), Blake (4 for 5 with a homerun and three RBIs), Clark (2 for 4 with a homerun and two RBIs), Boscan (2 for 5 with a homerun and three RBIs) and Canaii (4 for 5 with one RBI).

For the Enforcers, Wentz was 4 for 4 with two homeruns and five RBIs, Pollock (5 for 5 with one RBI), Rodriguez (2 for 4 with a homerun and three RBIs) and Aldemar Santos (3 for 4).
