William Tervo Dies in Florida

William Tervo William "Bill" Tervo passed away in Tampa, Florida, on Dec. 18 at the age of 78. Born in Hancock, Michigan, he was raised in Rochester, Minnesota, where he met and married Lois Tervo in 1958. After graduating from the University of Tampa, he worked in the Yellow Pages Department of Northwestern Bell Telephone back in Minnesota, becoming an area manager before deciding with Lois to move to St. Thomas in 1968.
Bill worked as the advertising director of the First Pennsylvania Bank for several years before joining the Virgin Islands Perfume Corporation, where both he and Lois worked for over 20 years. He then worked a short time in real estate, before becoming the owner of Sign-It, providing signage for companies all over the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. He retired in 2005.
Throughout his life he was involved in the community of St. Thomas. He and Lois were members of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, where he held several positions, including president of the board. An eagle scout, He was a member of the local Board of the Boy Scouts of America, also serving as scout master of Troop 1. He was also a member of the St. Thomas Chamber of Commerce.
His lifelong passion, however, was Rotary. The son of a Rotarian, he was actively involved in Rotary his entire professional career, working on a multitude of projects on both the local and district level. He was president of the Rotary Club of St. Thomas from 1981 to 1982, and although he had to leave St. Thomas due to health reasons, remained an honorary member of his Rotary Club.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Lois Tervo in 2006. He is survived by his three children: Bucky, Trace and Danielle; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation on St. Thomas is planned for the spring.
