Holiday Leave and Government Closures

Gov. John deJongh Jr. announced government workers holiday leave Friday.

DeJongh granted leave to nonessential government workers territorywide on Christmas Eve from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; New Year’ Eve from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and Jan. 3, the day of the children’s parade, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Christmas Day, the day after Christmas, and Three Kings Day on Jan. 6 are all local legal holidays so nonessential government employees already have the day off.

DeJongh granted additional leave only for St. Croix employees for Jan. 2, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for the St. Croix Christmas Carnival Food Arts and Crafts Fair (See related notes below)

“The St. Croix Crucian Christmas Festival provides a boost to our economy and helps to promote an understanding and appreciation of our culture. It is also an opportunity for Virgin Islanders to play the role of goodwill ambassadors for the territory,” deJongh said in his annual proclamation.

DeJongh said he has authorized commissioners and agency heads to grand administrative leave to nonessential employees working in the government to “enjoy the festival season and to encourage greater participation in the J’ouvert, Festival Food, Arts & Craft Fair and Children’s Parade and to enhance the celebration of the Christmas festival by all residents and visitors.”

And as holiday trash starts to pile up, Virgin Islanders need to be aware that V.I. Waste Management Authority transfer stations and convenience centers will also have limited holiday hours.

On St. Thomas, the Bovoni landfill will close at 4 p.m. Christmas Eve, at noon on Christmas and noon the day after Christmas. On New Year’s Eve, it closes at 4 p.m. and New Year’s Day it closes at noon. It closes at 4 p.m. on Jan. 3 and at 2 p.m. on Jan. 6.

The Susannaberg Transfer Station on St. John has the same closing hours.

On St. Croix, the Peter’s Rest Convenience Center closes at 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve, is closed Christmas Day, and is open until 8 p.m. the day after Christmas. It is open until 4 p.m. Dec. 31, closed New Year’s Day and closes at 8 p.m. on Jan. 2, 3 and 6.

The Division of Personnel operated under limited hours Friday and will again on Monday to allow employees to participate in the division’s annual year-end team-building exercise.

On Friday the St. Croix Office closed at noon and, on Monday, the St. Thomas office will close at noon.

The offices of the V.I. Board of Education will be closed from Dec. 23 through Jan. 6, reopening Jan. 7

The Office of the Lieutenant Governor was closed Friday on St. Croix and will be closed Monday from noon to 5 p.m.

The St. Croix AARP Office will be closed temporarily from Monday through Wednesday for renovations and observance of the holidays. The public is advised to telephone 340-713-2002 to leave a phone message and AARP staff will return the call as soon as they are available.
