Delta Increases Flights from N.Y., Atlanta

The U.S. Virgin Islands will start benefiting next month from more flights out of the New York and Atlanta gateways.

Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty previously announced the debut of daily flights from JFK International Airport to Cyril E. King International Airport on St. Thomas. The flights will run from Dec. 15 to March 30, 2014.

Nicholson-Doty said Delta will return in the summer to continue the daily New York service from July 1 to Sept. 2, 2014.

This winter Delta will also serve St. Thomas with twice daily flights from Atlanta’s Hartfield Jackson International Airport, and add a third Saturday service, representing a total of 15 flights per week from the Atlanta market.

"Delta Air Lines recognizes the strength and appeal of our destination and we are grateful for that," Nicholson-Doty said.

She estimated the carrier will bring more than 10,000 new seats on more than 50 additional flights to St. Thomas over the winter period.

The commissioner explained that the department’s airline development policy has resulted in noted growth in air capacity to St. Thomas. She said efforts continue in earnest to enhance additional lift to St. Croix.
