The Virgin Islands Police will be out in force through the weekend to make sure Halloween festivities remain safe and legal, Police Commissioner Rodney F. Querrard said Wednesday.
“We intend to do all we can to ensure the public’s safety,” Querrard said.
On Oct. 25, police stopped three men dressed as "bank robbers" for Halloween, carrying what appeared to be weapons. The first two proved to be realistic replicas, and the third was a very real .38 caliber handgun. All three weapons were confiscated and the man carrying the real firearm was arrested.
In light of that incident, Querrard said the public will see an increased police presence.
“This is not only as a deterrence to illegal behavior,” Querrard said. “It is also an opportunity to have positive interactions with the community as they enjoy the weekend parties.”
The commissioner said officers from Traffic Enforcement will monitor the territory’s roads and highways for impaired drivers. He urged the motoring public not to drink and drive, to have a designated driver in their company, to always wear seat belts, and to pay attention to the road and surroundings at all times.
