As we enjoy this holiday with family and friends, I think it is worth remembering that this is Labor Day, a holiday which celebrates the hard work of our people and the efforts over time to make safe and sustainable jobs – jobs which let our workers support their families in security — available to all Virgin Islanders and all Americans.
But as we celebrate those who work, we should not forget those who wish to work but cannot find employment, those who look to better their family’s futures with better opportunities. This is why economic development — business development — has always been a central goal of my administration. And, indeed, this is why I am meeting again with our senators on Tuesday in the hopes that we can come to an agreement to get the process of selling the refinery on St. Croix back on track. Because what greater importance can that effort have than providing hundreds upon hundreds of well-paying jobs on St Croix?
This effort is about jobs, our economic development policy is about jobs — and this Labor Day Holiday is about jobs as well. I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Labor Day.
