Fire Injures Six Children in Frederiksted

Police officers and Fire Department officials are investigating an early Saturday morning fire that injured six children in an apartment in the Frits E. Laweatz Housing community in Frederiksted, according to the V.I. Police Department.

The children ranged in age from three to 14-years-old. All of the children had minor burns and one five-year-old had burns on 15 to 20 percent of his body. He was flown off island for treatment, police said.

Residents in the area called the 911 emergency dispatch just before 3 a.m. Saturday. Police said the 14-year-old assisted three of the minors from the apartment and went back and retrieved the last two.

All of the children were taken to the Juan Luis Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police said the two mothers of the children were not in the apartment at the time.

Police also confirmed that the apartment did have electricity.

No one has been arrested at this time and the case remains under active investigation.
