V.I. Track and Field Federation’s Eddie Lovett Ends Successful Season

V.I. Track and Field Federation team member Eddie Lovett ended a long and successful season in the 110m hurdles event of the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia, on Aug. 11 with a sixth place finish in the first of three heats with a time of 13.51. He missed advancing to the semi-finals in a very competitive heat by 1 1/100 of a second behind William Sharmond of Great Britain, 13:50.
Lovett became only the second V.I. National Team Member to qualify for a hurdles event in an IAAF World Championships, joining Leslie Murray, who won a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Canada in 2010.
Lovett’s wining of the gold medal at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, in July is the first V.I. medal in that competition.
He is a student athlete at the University of Florida where he has earned several All-American honors and has helped the team to back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 2012 and 2013. He is the current NCAA Indoor National Champion in the 60m hurdles, and he finished second in the 110m hurdles event in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in June.
Of ten Caribbean 110m hurdlers at the World Championships, five advanced to the semi-finals. This is his first year representing the Virgin Islands in international competition. He is the only V.I. National Track and Field Team Member to compete in this year’s World Championships because Tabarie Henry, fourth place finisher in the 2009 Berlin IAAF World Championships 400m, is injured; Laverne Jones-Ferrette Semi-Finalist in Berlin 100m and 200m is injured as well.
Lovett is the son of the late Eddie Williams of Estate Upper Love, St. Croix, who died in November of 2012.
Financial support for the V.I. National Track and Field Team in Moscow was provided by: The Virgin Islands Olympic Committee, The IAAF and The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation
