UVI 2013 Fall Semester Orientation Slated for Aug. 11-16 UVI’s Fall Semester Orientation for new students is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 11 through Friday, Aug. 16. Activities begin when new students check into the residence halls on both campuses beginning at noon on Sunday. English and math placement tests are the first item on the new students’ agenda for Monday, Aug. 12.
This year’s orientation speaker is Jonathan Sprinkles, a high-energy motivational speaker and author. He will address new students, their parents and others during the orientation opening ceremonies which begin at noon Monday in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas Campus and at 6 p.m. that evening on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Orientation activities continue throughout the week, with advisement and registration set for Wednesday. UVI’s Fall Semester University Convocation is slated for 9 a.m. on Friday. It will be available via videoconference from multiple locations on both campuses. Classes start on Monday, Aug. 19.
UVI Signs Solar Power Purchase Agreement The University of the Virgin Islands entered a new era on Tuesday, July 30, with the signing of a power purchase agreement with New Generation Power (NGP) USVI. NGP will build a three megawatt photovoltaic system that is expected to produce 4.5 million kilowatt-hours annually. UVI President Dr. David Hall and NGP Chairman Dr. Chirinjeev Kathuria announced the venture on the UVI St. Thomas Campus, on the site where the solar project will be erected. The system will use approximately 4.2 acres on the St. Thomas Campus and 3.9 acres of the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. A news release is available from the UVI homepage – http://www.uvi.edu.
UVI Labor Day Invitational Volleyball Tourney Begins Aug. 30 at Sports and Fitness Center The UVI Athletic Department will host the 2013 edition of the UVI Annual Labor Day Invitational Volleyball Tournament for Virgin Islands club teams and visiting squads from the Caribbean and U.S. mainland from Friday, Aug. 30 through Sunday, Sept. 1.
U.S. based teams will be coming from California, Washington D.C., and Utah (the Mountain West Club). Caribbean squads are expected from the British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, St. Marten, St. Croix, and St. Thomas, along with UVI’s Buccaneer men’s and women’s squads. Round-robin format play begins at 7 p.m. on Aug. 30, in the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas Campus. Matches continue on Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by the championship matches slated for Sunday, Sept. 1, beginning at 6 p.m.
The tournament is sponsored by Subway of the Virgin Islands, radio station 107.9 DaVybe and the UVI Athletic Department. The daily admission fee is $2 per person. VIUCEDD to Offer American Sign Language Classes on St. Thomas, St. Croix in September American Sign Language classes will be offered in September on St. Thomas and St. Croix by the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) at UVI. Level I and II courses will run from Sept. 9 to Nov. 14 on both islands. Level I courses will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, while Level II courses are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All courses run from 5:30-7:15 p.m. The St. Thomas classroom location is Teacher Education Room 114. On St. Croix, the course location is the VIUCEDD Office at No. 1 Golden Grove.
The cost is $150 per course. Registration and payment is available online at http://asl.viucedd.org. In person registration and payment is available on St. Thomas in the Teacher Education Building on Wednesdays from noon to 2 p.m. In-person registration and payment is available from Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the VIUCEDD office at No. 1 Golden Grove. Director of Admissions and Recruitment to Promote UVI Recruitment Drive on Local Radio As part of the Admissions Office’s assertive late summer recruitment drive for fall 2013, Dr. Xuri Maurice Allen, director of Admissions, will make appearances on several local radio stations during the next two weeks to promote fall admission, registration, and enrollment at UVI. Dr. Allen will inform the public that the University will continue to accept fall applications and make admissions decisions until Friday, Aug. 23. He will share important dates in regard to new student orientation, registration and matriculation. He will also outline resources and referrals within Access and Enrollment Services that can assist prospective students in completing all processes that lead to enrollment.
Dr. Allen will be on the following stations and programs as indicated below:
• Tuesday, Aug. 6 and Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. – WUVI – 1090AM – “The UVI Insider”

UVI’s Historical Publication ‘Proud We Are’ Now on Sale on St. Thomas and St. Croix Copies of the UVI historical publication “Proud We Are” are now available in the UVI Bookstores on both campuses and in the Office of Institutional Advancement on St. Croix. Additionally, they are available from The Owl and the Seahorse in the Monsanto Marine Terminal in Crown Bay on St. Thomas and at the Happy Booker on King Street on St. Croix. The price of the book is $50. They will be available at additional outlets shortly. Visit one of these locations to purchase your copy.

UVI to Unveil Reichhold Center’s 35th Season at ‘Business After Hours’ on Aug. 22 UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts and the St. Thomas/St. John Chamber of Commerce invite the public to the exclusive unveiling of the Reichhold Center’s 35th anniversary 2013-2014 season line-up at “Business After Hours” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 22. The event will take place at the Reichhold Center across from Brewers Beach at UVI’s St. Thomas Campus. This will be the first opportunity for the public to preview scheduled performances for the Reichhold’s upcoming season and to purchase tickets.
