Police ID Saturday Murder Victim as Ronald Coulon

Julian VieraThe V.I. Police Department Monday identified the victim in Saturday’s fatal shooting that left one dead and two wounded on Market Street in Christiansted.

The victim was 38-year-old Ronald Coulon, also known as “Chakal.”

Police also released additional information on Julian Viera Jr., the suspect charged with Coulon’s murder.

According to the report, Viera attended his advice of rights hearing Monday and was formally charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, third-degree assault, unlawful possession of ammunition, first-degree reckless endangerment, failure to report a firearm brought into or obtained outside of the Virgin Islands, and possession of an unlicensed firearm during the commission of a crime of violence.

At the time of Saturday’s murder, Viera was awaiting trial for a criminal incident that occurred Dec. 31.

Viera was arrested, along with two other suspects, in connection with a shooting that occurred in the rear of the Festival Village in Frederiksted. During his court appearance on that 2012 charge, Viera was ordered by the court not to violate any laws of the Virgin Islands and to remain on house arrest. He was not assigned an electronic monitoring device by the court.
