UVI Students Needed for Research Entitled: ‘Condom Use Among Adult Residents in the USVI’ University of the Virgin Islands students are being sought to participate in a research project titled “Condom Use Among Adult Residents in the USVI.” The research will be conducted by PH.D. Candidate Linneth Thomas–Edwards, who is writing her dissertation in public health with Walden University. Thomas-Edwards received approval from UVI’s School of Nursing and the University’s Caribbean Exploratory Research Center to conduct the research. Only students 18 years and older can participate and all information collected will be confidential. Thomas-Edwards said that although the diversity of the Virgin Islands population and the high HIV/AIDS prevalence rate are thought to have a direct effect on the culture and health of the population, no empirical investigations have been conducted in the US Virgin Islands or in the Caribbean region. She said the Virgin Islands has the second highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate after sub-Saharan Africa.
“The purpose of my study is to determine whether HIV/AIDS-related infection knowledge, condom use attitudes and condom use self-efficacy are predictive of condom use among adult residents 18 years and older in the USVI,” said Thomas-Edwards. This research will take place on UVI’s St. Thomas Campus on July 23-25 and on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix on July 29 -31, 2013. For further information contact Linneth Thomas-Edwards at 404-723-3358 or at linneth.edwards@waldenu.edu.
