Eight-percent Cut Ends; August Checks Will Be for Full Pay

The eight-percent salary reduction for Virgin Islands government employees ended July 13, and most government workers will see the change reflected in their Aug. 8, Commissioner of Finance Angel E. Dawson Jr. announced Friday.

The pay reduction was part of Act 7261, the Economic Stability Act of 2011. It was proposed by Gov. John deJongh Jr. and enacted by the Legislature in the face of the economic crisis that saw sharply reduced government revenues.

Dawson explained that, due to the structure of the government’s payroll system, government employees will be paid as follows:

All government employees, except the ten-month employees of the Department of Education and Department of Human Services’ Head Start Program, will receive the eight-percent salary reinstatement on their Aug. 8 pay checks.

The ten-month employees of the Department of Education and the Department of Human Services’ Head Start Program will receive the reinstatement on their Sept. 19 checks.

Within two weeks, the Division of Personnel will issue notices of personnel action to each departmental personnel officer for distribution to those employees who were impacted.

Employees who want further information can contact their departmental human resource officer or departmental fiscal officer, Dawson added.
