UVI Student Khadijah Lee Named 2013 St. John Festival Queen UVI student Khadijah Lee was named the 2013 St. John Festival Queen on Saturday, June 22. She was among three UVI students competing in the pageant. Her fellow student participants were Charisma Hypolite and Monee’ Edwards. Lee also took awards for Miss Photogenic, Most Cooperative, Best Talent and Miss Intellect. Edwards won the competition’s Miss Congeniality award. Hypolite, who was named first runner-up, earned the Best International Wear and Best Evening Wear awards.
Charles King Named Virgin Islands Small Business Person of the Year The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) named Charles N. King, president of Delta Electric and Construction Co., the Virgin Islands Small Business Person of the Year. King will compete with small business owners in the mainland United States, Guam and Puerto Rico for the National Small Business Person of the Year award, which will be presented in Washington D.C. The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (VI-SBDC) and the U.S. SBA celebrated Virgin Islands Small Business Week, from May 26 to June 1, with workshops, trainings and lectures, and honored the territory’s top small businesses at luncheons held on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The theme of this year’s V.I. Small Business Week was, “Small Business: Persevering and Growing Your Business One Day at a Time." The SBDC and SBA honored 12 small businesses, business persons and organizations that exemplify sound business practices at award ceremonies held on May 29 at Marriott’s Frenchman’s Reef on St. Thomas and on May 30 at the St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort and Spa. UVI Choir and WUVI Receive Presidential Award Two student organizations were presented the University of the Virgin Islands President’s Appreciation Award on June 15.
UVI Early Registration for Fall Semester Returning Students Now Available The University of the Virgin Islands is now offering early registration for the fall semester for returning students. To view course offerings and other registration information, visit the registrar’s section of the UVI Web site – http://www.uvi.edu.
UVI Conducting English and Math Placement Tests for 2013 Fall Semester The University of the Virgin Islands is conducting mathematics and English placement testing for the fall 2013 semesters. See dates, times and locations for the remaining tests below. Both tests are computer-based and are administered simultaneously. There is no set time period for completing the tests, as persons continue until they are finished. However, many individuals are able to finish in approximately one hour. A picture ID is required to take the placement tests. Calculators will not be permitted during the math placement test. A math preparation guide is available at this link: http://bit.ly/taGZ6q.

Dates: Friday, July 19 – 3 p.m. for Math; 5 p.m. for English
Location: Math testing in Classroom Administration Building (CAB) computer lab, room 123.

Dates: Friday, July 19 – 3 p.m. for Math and 5 p.m. for English
Place: Math testing is in the Northwest Wing, room 133.
UVI’s School of Education Invitation for Third-Party Testimony The School of Education at the University of the Virgin Islands is hosting an accreditation visit by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) on Nov. 17-20. Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments to the visiting team. Please note that comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the party’s relationship to the institution (graduate, present or former faculty member, employer or graduate). We invite you to submit written testimony to: Board of Examiners, NCATE, 2010 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036-1023. Or by e-mail to: callforcomments@ncate.org.
Correspondence, which must be received by NCATE no later than three months prior to the visit, will be submitted to the School of Education for response via NCATE’s Accreditation Information Management System (AIMS). NCATE will not upload anonymous comments to the Board of Examiners (BOE) team or the School of Education.
Reichhold Center Seeks Volunteers for 35th Anniversary Season Launch at Business After Hours UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts is seeking volunteers to assist with its upcoming “Business After Hours” activity – the annual season launch party for the Reichhold’s upcoming performance line-up. The center will be celebrating its 35th anniversary season and is seeking assistance from individuals with outgoing and friendly personalities and a sincere appreciation for the arts. The season launch Business After Hours event, held in conjunction with the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce, takes place on Thursday, Aug. 22. UVICELL Course to Help Businesses Maneuver in the World of Social Media Businesses and organizations interested in learning how social media can benefit their efforts are invited to attend a new Social Media Marketing course to be offered by the UVICELL Center from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, beginning July 30. Sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.
Social Media Marketing is designed to help businesses connect with their customers and grow their business. The course is ideal for individuals who are just getting started in social media as well as those who are already on board. Participants will learn to integrate social media into their business, choose the right platform, to use social media to market their businesses more effectively. UVICELL to Offer Basic Computing Courses on St. Croix and St. Thomas Individuals interested in learning to use a computer can take advantage of a Basic Computing course to be offered by the University of the Virgin Islands – Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center. This course is ideal for individuals with little or no computer experience and will be offered on both St. Croix and St. Thomas. The schedule is as follows: St. Croix: 5:45-8:45 p.m. on Mondays starting July 22, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus; St. Thomas: 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays starting Aug. 10, at the UVICELL Center
Basic Computing is designed to help individuals overcome their fear of computers and will help them become better acquainted with technology. Participants will learn the essentials of computing such as basic computer concepts, using a keyboard and mouse, moving around the desktop, managing files, surfing the Internet and using email. The information will be presented in an easy to understand format and includes hands-on exercises.
