Man Injured in Attempted Robbery

A man attempting to get to his car was attacked and injured by two armed men about 10 p.m. Tuesday, the V.I. Police Department said.

The incident occurred in an area of Estate Nadir called Sanchez Town.

Officers dispatched to investigate a possible shooting victim in the area found the victim inside his vehicle, which was parked on the roadside. The victim, who is 52-year-old, told police that he was going to his car when a man with a white T-shirt over his face and brandishing a black handgun approached him and demanded money.

The victim said he grabbed the suspect’s hand and began to struggle with him. A second suspect, wearing a black T-shirt over his face and also carrying a handgun, approached and struck the victim on the right side of his head with his weapon, according to police reports.

The first suspect attempted to put his hand in to the victim’s pants pocket but they began to struggle again and both fell to the ground, at which point the suspect on the ground told the second suspect to shoot the victim.

At least three shots were fired by the second suspect; however, the victim was not hit by gunfire. The suspects then fled the area on foot towards Nadir.

Police and emergency medical technicians reported to the scene and the victim was taken to Schneider Regional Medical Center to be treated for a laceration to his head. Police did not identify the victim in accord with a department policy not to identify assault victims.

Police are still seeking the suspects.
