Miami Woman Killed in Crash near Western Cemetery

Helen SamuelA woman visiting St. Thomas from Miami died early Sunday when the car she was driving lost control, the V.I. Police Department reported.

According to officers from the Traffic Enforcement Bureau, at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday Helen Samuel was driving east on Harwood Highway in a silver Toyota Corolla when she lost control and collided with a utility pole. Medical personnel who arrived on the scene were unable to detect any signs of life.

Police said the accident occurred near the Western Cemetery.

According to the online TT News Flash of Trinidad and Tobago, the victim was a Trinidadian woman living in Miami also known as Helen De Peiza.

Traffic Investigation officers are continuing the investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

In a report on the accident TT News Flash, editor Rhondar Dowlat, a longtime friend of the deceased, described her as "free-spirited," a person who "loved life and loved the ‘limelight.’

"She was loved by all who crossed her path as she brought lots of fun, laughter and a friendly warmth," Dowlat said.
