Police ID Murder/Suicide Victims

The Virgin Islands Police Department on Friday released the names of the two victims of Tuesday’s apparent murder-suicide in Estate Smithfield.

According to Public Information Officer Melody Rames, the two women who died are Cathy Weikel, 56, and Tammy Zolner, 43. It was the fourth homicide on St. Croix since the start of the year, the 10th in the territory.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau detectives are continuing to investigate the fatal incident.

According to the police report, Zolner went to the Estate Smithfield home of Weikel, her former girlfriend, to collect some of her belongings. By 9 p.m. her new boyfriend had grown nervous and went to Weikel’s home to investigate. He was able to see inside and found the two women unresponsive. He then called the police.

According to the preliminary police report, both females suffered gunshot wounds and a firearm was found on the scene. Police said the home was locked and there was no sign of forced entry.
