After dominating the mares and fillies division on St. Croix during the last year or so, champion female thoroughbred Turned to Gold will test her form against the top male thoroughbreds in Saturday’s featured eighth race at the Randall “Doc” James racetrack.
Turned to Gold has won four races in a row and five of her last six races to reign supreme over the Virgin Islands female thoroughbreds division. She will be going up against some formidable males, including Puerto Rican Emblem, who ran a huge race last time only to be caught at the wire; Plotter, another fast horse who won his last race going wire-to-wire; newcomer Fly in the Soup, who won his last race in Puerto Rico; and Black Machine, who is in way over his head against this bunch.
The unaccustomed Saturday race card came about as a result of TRAXCO’s efforts to take advantage of some local history in the making. Two Crucian jockeys, Kevin Krigger and Victor Lebron, will be riding in the world famous Kentucky Derby on Saturday and Krigger’s mount, Goldencents, is among the favorites to win the Run for the Roses.
TRAXCO will have large screens on the track’s infield where the Derby will be televised live. Children will enter the track free of charge and all paying adults will get a $2 voucher to wager on the race.
