Cause of Main Street Fire Still Shrouded in Mystery

The cause of the fire that started on the second floor of the Little Switzerland shop on Main Street Sunday night remains under investigation.

Daryl George, assistant fire service director, said Monday afternoon that the downstairs boutiques – Tiffany & Co., Breitling and Little Switzerland – suffered significant water damage and light smoke damage. George said everything has been extinguished and there are no hot spots on the roof.

Main Street, which had been closed to traffic to accommodate the fire equipment, was opened just before 2 p.m. Monday, said Georg, who offered an apology to the public for the inconvenience.

Little Switzerland spokesman Jack Coote said late Monday afternoon."At this stage, we really don’t know what caused it. The investigators are still gathering information. We really haven’t had a chance to go into the store to see the extent of the damage. We hope to be cleared by the fire marshals by mid-afternoon tomorrow."
