St. John Man Dies in Car Accident

A 32-year-old St. John man died Wednesday in a one-car accident near the Caneel Bay overlook on the North Shore Road.

Police Department Melody Rames identified the man as Richard Tetrick. The accident happened around 6:30 p.m.

According to St. John Rescue and V.I. National Park officials, Tetrick’s vehicle went off the road and he was ejected from the vehicle. Bob Malacarne of St. John Rescue said Tetrick flew downhill about 30 feet. He identified the vehicle as a small Jeep with a “rag” top.

“It was a very bad accident. He lost control of the car,” Park Chief Ranger Lloyd Morris said.

Malacarne said Tetrick was dead at the scene. He said it appears that he was the only person in the vehicle, but that the emergency responders at the scene searched the bushes in case another person flew out of the vehicle.

Morris said the accident is still under investigation so it’s not known whether he was wearing a seat belt.

Malacarne said St. John Rescue transported Tetrick to Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center’s morgue.

He said that in addition to St. John Rescue, the park and the police, Emergency Medical Services responded.
