Miss Urban Teenz Contestants hold Bake Sale

Urban Teenz candidates with pageant founder Alexander Simon.Sweet treats and meet-and-greets were on display Saturday afternoon as the seven contestants for the upcoming Miss Urban Teenz Scholarship competition held a bake sale in the Sion Farm Shopping Center.

The sale was held to raise funds for the pageant’s scholarship fund.

Each year the scholarship competition links with a different community organization, and this year members chose the American Cancer Society. This year’s theme is “Going Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness."

Alexander Simon, founder and director of Miss Urban Teenz, said the competition is unlike other pageants. The contestants do not receive any cash award; the prize is sent directly to the college or university of the winner’s choice.

“This is our first kickoff event leading up to the show,” Simon said.

He said the target for the scholarship is $6,500.

The chocolate cake, muffins and cookies and other baked goods on sale were provided by the parents of some of the contestants. Volunteers from the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and few of the contestants helped sell the treats.

Some of contestants introduced themselves to the community by showing posters to passing traffic. The posters had the contestants’ pictures and creative designs. Some of the girls sold beverages to upcoming cars and pedestrians while urging them to support the cause of the competition.

The contestants also had time to squeeze a little fun during the sunny afternoon by dancing to the music provided by Malik Stridiron of Deathrow Sounds.

The scholarship completion will be at 7 p.m. April 20 at the St. Croix Educational Complex High School. Tickets will be $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and will be available at Armstrong Ice Cream, Cruzan Apparel, Jackie’s Beauty Supply and Urban Threadz.

One portion of the show will call on contestants to dress in a creative outfit made strictly from recyclable items.

“They can use anything in the environment,” Simon said.

Breann-Sea Joseph, 12, said she wants to express her creativity in the show. This will be her fourth pageant, she added.

“I love doing pageants,” Joseph said.

Alijah Deterville, 12, said she also loves pageants, when she is not playing softball in her league.

“I want to express all my talents in the show,” Deterville said.

Simon said businesses in the community are already contributing and supporting the scholarship competition. He said EPOK Graphics made their "Going Pink for Breast Cancer" flier. Teddy’s Party Rentals and the contestants’ parents also donated funds.
