Results Given for Spring Fling Triathlon for Ages 5-15

Junior Tri VI held its Spring Fling Triathlon took place on Sunday, March 3, at Cramer’s Park. Kids from six different schools, ages 5-15, took part in the race, which was hosted by the St. Croix Montessori School in Orange Grove. Although he was one of the smallest in the race, Devanté Larsen of GHS took off like lightning in the swim. He remained ahead of the field of young athletes and finished the 25-meter swim, .5-mile bike and .25-mile run in 8:46 overall in the 5-6 year-old category. Kaeden Gleason of CDS was second and classmate Barrett Walker was third. Kirra Lambert finished first for the girls in 10:08, Lyla Boyan was second and Maria Wilson was third.
The big group of 7-8 year-olds took to the water soon after. Country Day School (CDS) student Brice Richards emerged first from the 50-meter swim. Three girls, Kendra Calpano-Butler, Chloe Westbrooks and Charlotte Halk, were soon on his tail. Kalani Watkins of AZ Academy and Zion Knowles of St. Croix Montessori made up some time on the bike and secured their second and third positions overall. Brice finished first in 8:00. Charlotte Halk outrode her competitors and finished first for the girls in 9:25. Kendra and Chloe were second and third, respectively.
In the 9-11 year-old category, Nati Kuipers decided her race in the first leg when she finished the 100m swim in 2:33. Mikey Dizon-Bumann caught Nati on the 1-mile bike course, but she recovered her lead on the .5-mile run. Nati finished first overall in a speedy 13:38. Mikey was the first boy to finish; Cooper Crowther of GHS was second and classmate Mathieu Dale was third. Shanice Muller of AZ Academy was second, and Zavy Wilson of CDS was third.
The final (and smallest) group was the 12-15 year-old triathletes. Kenny Wilson, brother of Zavy, swam a comfortable 3:12 for the 200 meters. Newcomer Simon Westbrooks was the second out of the water. While unsure of the 3-mile bike course, Wilson managed to keep ahead of Simon and Andreas Moorman by a few seconds. Wilson finished the 1-mile run just over one minute ahead of Andreas. Simon was third. Sophie Dean of CDS had a consistent race. Although the heat of the morning got to her, she plugged through and finished in 37:39.
The next race in the Junior Tri VI series is the Splash ‘n Dash (swim/run) at Chenay Bay on April 14, followed by the Grand Finale Triathlon at Cramer’s Park on May 19.
