Governor John P. deJongh Jr. has proclaimed March 2013 as “Women’s History Month” in the Virgin Islands to recognize and honor all Virgin Islands women and to support community organizations holding special programs and activities that call attention to the accomplishments of the territoy’s notable women across the generations
As part of the 2013 observation, First Lady Cecile deJongh launched a radio campaign to educate the public on this year’s theme: “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.” Throughout the month of March, public service announcements describing the achievements of Virgin Islands women will be broadcast on radio stations throughout the territoy.
“It’s so important to highlight the achievements of Virgin Islands women of this and previous generations so that girls and boys growing up today can set their sights on achieving great things with their own lives. This year, we honor women who have made notable contributions in the fields of math, science and technology, with the hope of inspiring a new generation of achievers,” Ms. deJongh said.
In the Virgin Islands, we celebrate and honor Women’s History Month by reflecting upon and remembering that the territory has a rich history of noteworthy and pioneering women whose work – socially, economically, culturally and politically – has shaped and improved the quality of life for all women who came after them.
The territory’s Commission on the Status of Women has likewise been instrumental in improving and recognizing the achievements of Virgin Islands women in the areas of health, housing, justice, pay equity, family relations, legislation, employment and political status.
In recognition of Women’s History Month, First Lady deJongh has also created a commemorative booklet of notable Virgin Islands women. The booklet is being distributed to schools, libraries and other locations throughout the Territory.
Governor and First Lady deJongh call upon all Virgin Islanders and community organizations to join them in observing Women’s History Month and celebrating the achievements of Virgin Islands women past, present and future.
