The 2013 local triathlon season begins on Sunday, March 10, with the West Is Best Triathlon. The Sprint Distance and Try-A-Tri races will be held at 7 a.m. at Coconuts on the Beach in Frederiksted.
The Sprint Distance Triathlon will begin with a .5-mile swim, follow with a flat 12-mile bike and conclude with a 3-mile run. The Try-A Tri race will feature a .25-mile swim, 7-mile bike and 1.5-mile run.
The race is traditionally the most popular local race of the season. Race applications can be filled out at Stamina Sports, located at 4A Orange Grove in Christiansted.
The second race of the year will be Triple Play Triathlon, to be held on April 7 at Cramer’s Park. This event features a choice of three distances: Olympic, Sprint and Try-a-Tri.
These races both lead up to the St. Croix Ironman 70.3, scheduled for May 5. This race will include triathletes from all over the world, as well as a world-class field of professional athletes.
