Police Investigate Fatal Shooting in Christiansted

A St. Croix man was found shot to death Saturday afternoon in the David Jackson Housing Terrace in Christiansted, the V.I. Police Department reported.

The shooting occurred a little after 3:15 p.m. Police have identified the victim as Winston Phillips of Bassin Triangle.

According to the police, officers responded to a report shots fired in the housing community and found Phillips unresponsive on the ground. Emergency medical technicians arrived on the scene and confirmed there were no vital signs.

It was the first homicide on St. Croix since the first of the year, the third in the territory.

Detectives from Criminal Investigation and Major Crime are seeking a suspect in the murder.

St. Croix acting Police Chief James Parris decried the incident as a wanton act of violence that took place in view of families and children.

"The police need your assistance in identifying this suspect," Parris said. "If you know anything about this crime call a police officer you trust or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers."

Detectives can be reached at 1-340-712-6077 or 1-340-712-6037. Those with information also can call 911 or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers VI, at 1-800-222-TIPS.
