New Human Rights Advocacy Organization Formed

Co-founders Melba Mathurin and Indira Liebert launched Liberty Place Inc. on Dec. 19, 2012, on St. Croix. It is a community-based organization that is committed to supporting human rights by creating a safe space to promote diversity and foster positive self-identity. It envisions a Virgin Islands that recognizes equality and is inclusive of diversity regardless of one’s race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation or religion.
The new organization is committed to developing educational programs, social activities and outreach to raise awareness of diversity, cultural sensitivity, anti-bullying, and sexual orientation and gender identity issues. Liberty Place provides group support in a safe and supportive environment for young adults, their families, and allies who have questions about sexual orientation and gender identity. The co-founders are advocating for local legislation against hate crimes to end discrimination, harassment and abuse faced by marginalized groups in the community.
