Kaleed M. Ferdinand, 22, of St. Croix was arrested around 6 a.m. Tuesday on animal abuse and neglect charges in connection with an April 17 incident, the Police Department said in a press release issued Tuesday.
According to police, Ferdinand was identified as the person who allegedly kicked a small dog, causing a pelvis dislocation and other injuries, in an incident near Sunny Isles Shopping Center.
Witnesses said Ferdinand was talking with a female who was walking with a small tan dog. They indicated the dog was walking around the female when Ferdinand allegedly violently kicked the dog in its lower back, which caused the dog to cry out in pain and spin around, according to police reports.
Police said concerned citizens called the police and the Animal Welfare Center, which took the animal to the veterinarian.
The suspect’s bail was set at $10,000. Ferdinand was remanded to the custody of the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending further court action.
