Salt River Bay Visitor’s Center Closes for Season June 8

The National Park Service will close the Visitor Contact Center above the Columbus Landing Site on June 8 for the off-season. NPS thanks all of St. Croix’s residents and visitors to the Virgin Islands for a successful year at the Visitor’s Contact Station. There was a 300 percent increase in visitation to the sites: Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve Visitor’s Center.
During the 2010-11 tourist season, NPS greeted 1336 visitors. In 2011-12, 4123 visitors came to the top of Columbus Landing. Most came to see the two art exhibitions and attended the opening events for both the MREC/Salt River Bay Landscape Exhibit and the Columbus Landing Photography show. Also, several groups have used the site for conferences, public hearings and private events. Of course, many come for the extraordinary view of this site. As always, we will offer tours of the site in the off-season by appointment. Please contact David Goldstein at 773-1460, ext. 233.
In 2012-13, NPS has planned several events and exhibits, including a week of events entitled “Celestial Navigation at the Time of Columbus” for the seasonal reopening the week of Nov. 14.
