Genevieve Whitaker Chosen to Attend Yahoo! Summit on Women

Genevieve Whitaker has been selected as one of 15 candidates from across the U.S. to attend Yahoo!’s upcoming summit on women’s leadership, business, human rights and technology on May 18 in Washington, D.C. Aptly titled “Change Your World DC,” the summit will bring together a diverse cross-section of women leaders from around the United States. It will focus on how women are using technology, the Internet and social media to create positive change in the world, with an emphasis on governance, policy and media, technology for development and using social media to address women’s health and reproductive policy.

Whitaker said, “I am so humbled to have been nominated and selected among so many great women from across the United States. I look forward to representing my beloved homeland at the summit.”
The field of participants is made up of Republicans and Democrats, local office holders, Senate candidates, a diverse group of women stepping up to make change in our democracy. It will bring together leading thinkers, politicians, journalists and activists for an intensive one-day summit and private dinner with distinguished panelists as part of Yahoo!’s Business & Human Rights Program(BHRP) which was launched in 2008.
“As a Millennial, I am inspired to continue to use technology to create social change within my community, a community grappling with the systemic ills of a rising unemployed population, energy and waste crisis, and a high rate of crime and juvenile delinquency,” said Whitaker.
By way of background, as relates to women and children’s rights, Whitaker is the president and a co-founder of Virgin Islands Youth Advocacy Coalition Inc.; a board member of League of Women Voters of the USVI (former St. Croix Unit Leader); a former vice-president of the Business and Professional Women’s Organization of St. Croix (2009 BPW Virgin Islands Young Careerist), and the former first vice-president of the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Network. She is also a former Amnesty International USA Florida Legislative Coordinator and board member of the United Nations Association of the USA’s Tampa Bay Chapter and chair of the Young Professionals for International Cooperation program.
Whitaker received her law degree from Stetson University College of Law, a Certificate in International Human Rights Law from Oxford University, an undergraduate degree in Government and World Affairs from The University of Tampa and is currently a graduate student of political management at The George Washington University. She is a communications specialist with AARP Virgin Islands (Associate State Director of Communications), an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of the Virgin Islands and CEO of The Whitaker Consultant Group, a legal and political consultant firm.
