Alexander Henderson to Remain Closed Thursday

Alexander Henderson Elementary will remain closed Thursday as maintenance crews continue to clean up after the holiday weekend vandalism.

St. Croix Insular Superintendent Gary Molloy and his staff received reports of the break-in Monday morning and subsequently did a walk-through of the campus, which had been visibly vandalized. School was closed Tuesday and Wednesday to give officials time to clean and fix air conditioning units, fire extinguishers and other items that may have touched, polluted or broken by the vandals.

Molloy also met Wednesday at the school with Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials, who he had invited to come in for an update on the situation and cleanup efforts.

“We wanted OSHA to be in on any consultations we’re having with the maintenance and cleaning staff,” Molloy said. “At the meeting today, their representatives seemed pleased with what we’ve done and how we have been approaching the cleanup, and they recommended that we use tomorrow to bring in the school’s staff to do an assessment on what could possibly have been stolen from the campus during the break-in.”

The school’s staff is expected to report in at 8 a.m. Thursday.

According to Molloy, the first phase of the cleanup – a general cleaning of the campus and any debris – was complete and crews were beginning Wednesday to vacuum out the school’s central air conditioning unit. The school should be ready to receive students on Friday, Molloy said.
