Port Authority Officer Helps Net Illegal Gun

Ashwin Chugani was arrested Sunday after an off-duty Port Authority officer allegedly saw him drop a gun in the street.

Police said Chugani, 22, dropped the gun and some other items in the Sub Base area Sunday morning.

The Port Authority officer said they saw the firearm, secured it and notified the police. Chugani was arrested about a half hour later and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, according to a V.I. Police Department news release.

Police said they confiscated Chugani’s 40-caliber Glock handgun and a 15 round magazine containing 12 live rounds. Bail for Chugani was set at $25,000 and he was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending further court action.
