Lucy Simmons Walter Dies in Florida

Lucy Simmons Walter died on Jan. 7 in Jacksonville, Florida. Lucy was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on Sept. 28, 1918.
She is survived by her daughters: Jane Walter and Mary Ann Syms; son-in-law, Chris Syms; grandson, Jason Syms; sister, Mary Newman; stepson, Ted Walter; and many nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.
Lucy, with her late husband Ahto, fished the Galaragos Islands for several years before settling on the island of St. Thomas. They bought the first "frozen chickens" on the island of St. Thomas and started and owned Lucy’s market for many years. Upon retiring they opened a small guest house and restaurant on Trellis Bay in the British Virgin Islands. Lucy once again retired and lived with her sister Mary in Jacksonville Beach.
Lucy was loved by everyone she came in contact with and will be deeply missed. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1423 8th Ave. North, Jacksonville Beach, Florida. A future memorial service will be held on St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, later this summer.
Arrangements are by John Thomas Memorial Chapel.
