The Martin Luther King Jr. Day march and rally put on annually by the Central Labor Council of the Virgin Islands will be Monday in Frederiksted this year.
The day is dedicated to remembering King, born on Jan. 15, 1929, who led the fight for civil rights in the 1960s before his assassination in 1968. Monday is the federal holiday marking the 83rd anniversary of King’s birth. This year, the march is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. sharp, Monday morning at Claude O. Markoe Elementary School.
Revelers will march to Buddhoe Park for a small rally with food and drinks, organizer Antoinette Rampersad said Friday. There will be a keynote address by David Muhammad, a native of St. Croix who led the local Minister of Muhammad Study group on St. Croix where he was responsible for the spiritual, economic, and social development of men, women and children in Islam.
The march celebrates the diverse character of St. Croix and all are welcome, Rampersad said.
"I hope everyone will be there," she said.
