Dolphins Compete at St. Maarten and Princeton

St. Croix Dolphins Swim Team in Princeton
Over the weekend of Nov. 18-21, the St. Croix Dolphins Swim Team sent two groups of swimmers to two separate meets: one on the campus of Princeton, N.J., and the other on St. Maarten. The following are the results and highlights of these two meets.
Princeton, N.J.
The St. Croix Dolphins Swim Team took 16 swimmers ages 10 to 17 to the 2001 Fall Festival Meet of X-Cellence, which was held on the beautiful Princeton, N.J., campus from Nov. 18-20, 2011. Forty-five teams from around the state competed, with more than 1,000 swimmers registered for the meet. The meet included seven sessions held in two, 25-yard, eight-lane pools. To participate in the meet, swimmers had to meet specific qualification times.
The Dolphins represented their island very well, accomplishing 51 personal best swim times, including two best relay times in 200 yard freestyle and 200yd medley relays for the boys 11-12 team (Webster Bozzo, Nicholas Dascher, Matthew Mays and Jonathan Thomas) and one best relay time in the 200yd freestyle relay by the boys 15-19 team (Bryson Mays, Evan Warehime, Alex Lewit and Victor Torres).
Seventeen-year-old Bryson Mays took third in the boys 15-19, 400-yard individual medley, and his brother, 12-year-old Matthew Mays, took third in the boys 11-12, 400-yard IM and second in the boys 11-12, 200-yard butterfly. Twelve-year-old Jonathan Thomas and 13-year-old Nico Stines each posted personal best times for every event they swam. Meet highlights are listed below:
Boys 10 and Under
Zachary Bozzo – four personal best times: 50yd Breaststroke (42.26), 100yd Freestyle (1:16.15), 100yd IM (1:28.13), 100yd Breaststroke (1:35.98)
Girls 10 and Under
Cora Warehime – three personal best times: 50yd Butterfly (41.71), 100yd Freestyle (1:22.76), 100yd Butterfly (1:39.58)
Boys 11-12
Webster Bozzo – two personal best times: 200yd Freestyle (2:14.59), 100yd Butterfly (1:12.91)
Nicholas Dascher – five personal best times: 400yd IM (5:10.15 – 6th place overall), 200yd Breaststroke (2:53.83), 200yd Freestyle (2:10.28 – 9th place), 100yd Breaststroke (1:21.65), 100yd Backstroke (1:15.60)
Matthew Mays – Two medals: 3rd place 400yd IM (5:01.74), 2nd place 200yd Butterfly (2:22.34). Four personal best times: 200yd Backstroke (2:18.97 – 5th place), 50yd Freestyle (27.53), 100yd Backstroke (1:04.98 – 4th place), 100yd Freestyle (59.81). Also placed fourth in the 100yd Butterfly and 10th in the 200yd IM.
Jonathan Thomas – seven personal best times: 100yd Breaststroke (1:19.00), 50yd Freestyle (28.26), 200yd Backstroke (2:33.17), 200yd Breaststroke (2:45.62 – 10th place overall), 200yd Freestyle (2:12.33), 100yd Backstroke (1:12.75), 100yd Freestyle (1:00.24)
Girls 11-12
Chloe Hayden – one personal best time: 200yd Backstroke (2:35.96)
Boys 13-14
Tony Hendricks – one personal best time: 200yd IM (2:11.40 – 7th place). Also placed 5th in the 100yd Breaststroke and 8th in the 100yd Backstroke.
Nico Stines – six personal best times: 50yd Freestyle (23.91 – 5th place), 100yd Butterfly (1:00.18), 100yd Freestyle (1:53.51 – 5th place), 200yd IM (2:14.23), 100yd Backstroke (1:05.13), 100yd Freestyle (51.87 – 5th place).
Girls 15-19
Brigitte Rasmussen – 7th place finish 200yd Breaststroke (2:36.85)
Caylee Watson – three personal best times: 200yd Backstroke (2:14.72), 100yd Backstroke (1:01.95 – 10th place), 100yd Freestyle (56.27)
Gloria Morales – three personal best times: 50yd Freestyle (27.70), 200yd Freestyle (2:14.17), 100yd Freestyle (1:01.53)
Boys 15-19
Bryson Mays – One Medal: 3rd place 400yd IM (4:19.20) Place 7th in the 100yd Butterfly, 5th place 200yd IM, and 4th place 200yd Butterfly.
Evan Warehime – three personal best times: 50yd Freestyle (24.12), 100yd Breaststroke (1:09.33), 100yd Backstroke (1:00.93)
Alex Lewit – two personal best times: 200yd Freestyle (2:04.76), 100yd Backstroke (1:08.17)
Victor Torres – four personal best times: 200yd Backstroke (2:16.84), 200yd Freestyle (2:12.85), 200yd IM (2:27.85), 100yd Freestyle (59.55)
Head Coach John Vasbinder was pleased with the best times produced by the swimmers. He commented that this meet provided excellent experience for them, particularly for those looking to qualify for CARIFTA in 2012, because it was a fast-paced, highly competitive meet.
St. Maarten
The Dolphins Swim Team also took five swimmers to compete at the St. Maarten SuperSplash Invitational Swim Meet over the weekend of Nov. 19-20. This meet was hosted by the St. Maarten Supersplash swim team and included teams from around the Caribbean. The meet was conducted in a four-lane, 25-meter length pool on the island of St. Maarten.
The Dolphins Team placed 4th overall with 157 points out of 7 teams and brought home four Age Group High Point Trophies. In the girls 9-10 age group, Sophia Alvarado took the 1st place High Point Award with 39 points, Hannah Tonin took second with 27 points, and Jessica Aloyo took 5th with 14 points. Izhani Rosa took the 2nd place High Point Award for the girls 11-12 age group, and Hunter Tonin took the 2nd place High Point Award for the Boys Age 8 and under.
The team accomplished 23 best times out of 28 swims. The following are some meet highlights:
Boys Age 8 and Under
Hunter Tonin – 2nd place High Point Award. Six personal best times out of six events: 50m Butterfly (1:20.78 – 2nd place), 50m Freestyle (54.94 – 2nd place), 100m Breaststroke (2:44.18 – 2nd place), 100m IM (2:19.08 – 3rd place), 100m Freestyle (2:06.81 – 2nd place), 50m Breaststroke (1:15.08 – 3rd place)
Girls 9-10
Sophia Alvarado – 1st place High Point Award. Six personal best times out of 6 events: 50m Butterfly (53.81 – 1st place), 50m Freestyle (41.46, 3rd place), 200m Breaststroke (3:57.64 – 1st place), 100m Freestyle (1:27.81 – 1st place), 50m Backstroke (49.37 – 1st place), 100m Breaststroke (1:53.56 – 1st place).
Hannah Tonin – 2nd place High Point Award. Three personal best times: 200m IM (3:53.49 – 1st place), 200m Breaststroke (4:18.12 – 4th place), 100m IM (1:45.87 – 2nd place). Placed 3rd in the 100m Freestyle, 3rd in the 100m Breaststroke, and 5th in the 50m Freestyle.
Jessica Aloyo – 5th place overall in points. Three personal best times: 100m IM (2:03.55 – 4th place), 100m Freestyle (1:58.34 – 4th place), 50m Backstroke (56.81 – 2nd place). Placed 5th in the 50m Butterfly and 6th in the 50m Freestyle.
Girls 11-12
Izhani Rosa – 2nd place High Point Award. Three personal best times: 100m Breaststroke (1:52.27 – 1st place), 100m IM (1:42.37 – 1st place), 100m Freestyle (1:29.53 – 2nd place). Placed 2nd in the 50m Butterfly and 2nd in the 50m Freestyle.
The Girls Relay Team of Sophia Alvarado, Hannah Tonin, Jessica Aloyo, and Izhani Rosa also completed two best relay times in the 200m Freestyle Relay (2:55.55 – 1st place) and the 200m Medley Relay (3:22.46 – 4th place).
