After talking to local community members, St. Thomas police quickly arrested a man who made off with $200,000 in stolen jewelry after robbing a store on Main Street.
Police arrested 18-year-old Jemoy Gordon early Wednesday afternoon after being advised by 911 operators about a robbery in progress. At the scene, officers gathered information from the community, Main Street businesses and security personnel, which helped them to locate Gordon on Back Street about an hour later, according to a V.I. Police Department news release.
“This swift arrest is an excellent example of police and the community working together toward a quick and successful resolution to a problem,” Chief of Detectives Milton Petersen said in the release.
Along with the jewelry, officers also found a handgun on Gordon at the time of his arrest. Police said Gordon has been living on St. Thomas for approximately three months but could have had prior run-ins with the law in his native Tortola. VIPD detectives have contacted Tortola police to find out if Gordon has outstanding warrants, the release said.
Gordon was charged with first-degree robbery, and his bail was set at $75,000 at the time of his arrest. He has been remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending further court action.
