18-Year-Old Nabbed After Car Theft

Police on St. Croix arrested and charged 18-year-old Jared James for first-degree robbery near Catherine’s Rest minutes after he allegedly stole a vehicle at gunpoint Wednesday.

According to the police report, shortly after 10 a.m. officers were notified of the vehicle which was stolen in Estate St. Peters in Christiansted. The suspect drove off in the car and police issued an all-points-bulletin on it.

Shortly after, an officer saw the vehicle named in the APB travelling west on South Shore Road. The suspect, later identified as James, crashed the vehicle into a busy area, and began running on foot.

Officers apprehended and arrested him at 10:15 a.m. without incident. Police confiscated a loaded 9 mm firearm and recovered the vehicle.

A record check confirmed James is not licensed to carry a firearm in the Virgin Islands. He was charged with first-degree robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence, failure to register a firearm, possession of ammunition, unauthorized use of a vehicle and buying, receiving or possessing stolen property.

Bail for James was set at $75,000 and he was remanded to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending further court action.
