Humane Society Needs Volunteers to Help Open No-Flea Boutique

Lightly used treasures are sure to be found at the No-Flea Boutique, which opens Oct. 23.The Humane Society of St. Thomas needs volunteers to help open its No-Flea Boutique—the resale shop beloved by bargain hunters and animal lovers alike—at the new Humane Care Campus by Barktoberfest on Oct. 23.

There will be many volunteer opportunities this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15 and 16, at the Campus off Weymouth Rhymer Highway and across from Cost-U-Less.

Volunteers who want to clean and prepare the storefront, do landscape maintenance or take on one of the many other jobs that will help open the Campus should arrive at 10 a.m. Please wear clothes that can get dusty or dirty, and bring your own snacks and drinks.

Those who would like to donate clean, gently used or new household and clothing items to the No-Flea Boutique should come to the campus between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday or Sunday. Please make sure all clothing is in good condition, and bring these donations on hangers if possible.

During a recent workday, volunteers unpacked all sorts of stored secondhand treasures—including Manolo Blahnik pumps, Ann Taylor skirts and Bebe brand dresses.

Volunteers are needed to take home bags of clothing to be washed, dried and readied for sale. This is an easy way to help the island’s homeless pets until the Humane Society gets its own washer and dryer at the new Campus.

The No-Flea Boutique is the largest source of operating revenue for the Humane Society of St. Thomas, the island’s sole organization tasked with helping the island’s homeless, neglected and abused pets. Because of the island’s severe pet overpopulation problem, nearly four out five companion animals on St. Thomas are euthanized.

Besides volunteering this weekend, Humane Society supporters can help stop pet overpopulation by buying up all the inventory at the current flea market site in Estate Nadir. Everything in the old store is just $1!

The market is open Sunday from 1 to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m., Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For a prompt response to questions about donating to the No-Flea Boutique, write Retail Coordinator Leslie Maxwell at lesliemaxwell50@yahoo.com.

Phone messages for Maxwell can be left with Lisa at the Humane Society Shelter, 775-0599. For more information about volunteering at the new Humane Care Campus, write Volunteer Coordinator Leigh Cordiner at larlei@hotmail.com, and mark your calendars for Barktoberfest on Oct. 23.
