Edward Stinson Dies in Florida

Edward Stinson

On Sept. 15, Edward Stinson died in Sarasota, Florida. Teddy moved to St. Thomas in 1954 from Maryland with a Red Willy’s Jeep that matched his red hair and a young family in tow. As a young man, he took out tourists on the Harmon’s glass bottom boat but eventually went into home construction here in the islands. He loved sailing and took a few years off to buy and sail a yacht from San Francisco back to St. Thomas with good friend Alex Crowell. He then began a new phase of his life by moving to Bradenton, Florida, where, over the years, other island friends congregated. Often they gathered at the home of John and Barbara Knight, who were also previously of St. Thomas and owners of one of his homes. They regaled many with stories of the islands about a time when life here was simple and captivating.
Teddy is survived by his sister in Ohio, Eleanor Menton; niece, Katherine Menton of New Mexico; nephew, John Menton; grand nephew, Quinn Menton of New Zealand; and favorite cousin, Robert Hand of Georgia. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed, especially by his daughter Darby Carstarphen and grandson Kimball Carstarphen, who still reside on St. Thomas.
