Brief: Police Arrest Suspect in 2005 Murder

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau on St. Thomas arrested a suspect in connection with the 2005 killing of Eudlid Smith Jr., the V.I. Police Department reported Tuesday.

Because the suspect was a minor when the murder was committed, his name cannot be released to the public, the police said.

The suspect has been charged with first-degree murder, aiding and abetting, third-degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a crime of violence.

Smith’s murder occurred May 30, 2005, in Estate Anna’s Retreat. Criminal Investigation Bureau detectives continued to investigate this six-year old case and subsequent information led police to identify the suspect.

The suspect was held without bail pending further court action.

“This demonstrates to the public that the police department continues to actively investigate all murder cases," said Acting Police Commissioner Raymond L. Hyndman. "Detectives are sometimes waiting for that key piece of evidence or witness statement that will bring a case together so the strongest evidence can be presented to a jury.”
