Labor Resumes Unemployment Services to St. John Residents

The Department of Labor — Division of Unemployment Insurance has resumed office hours on St. John. Staff of the division is providing outreach services every other Thursday. Residents may apply for Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits and obtain information on other programs and services, which are also provided by the department at the St. Thomas and St. Croix locations, according to a press release issued Friday by the Department of Labor Commissioner Albert Bryan Jr.
“We have always been concerned about the inconvenience and the cost to our St. John residents whenever they have to leave St. John to apply for UI benefits, or to seek other services such as filing a wrongful discharge claim, applying for a child labor certificate, or any of the services that we provide. Being able to resume on-island services to the residents of St. John is a step in the right direction, especially during these challenging times,” said Commissioner Bryan.
“The Unemployment Insurance program continues to sustain displaced workers and their families by paying UI benefits to qualified beneficiaries. Over the past two and a half years of this Great Recession, the Department of Labor has issued payments in excess of $100 million in UI benefits to Virgin Islands residents. This is significant, and the funds go right back into the local economy to support businesses through consumer spending for basic commodities,” Bryan concluded.
St. John residents may visit the office located at The Battery, St. John Administrator Complex (formerly the Tax Assessor’s Office). The hours of operation are 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every other Thursday.
