FYI: Back to School Prayer Day and Father’s March Day Proclaimed

Governor John P. de Jongh Jr. has proclaimed Aug. 28 as “Back to School Day of Prayer” in the Virgin Islands and Aug. 31 as “Day of the V.I. Father’s March” to start the 2011-2012 school year with a positive spirit and supportive attitude.
On Back to School Day of Prayer, Governor de Jongh calls upon the territory’s clergy to lead the community in prayer on behalf of the students, teachers and administrators returning to school in the Virgin Islands and abroad.
The involvement of the church and community in asking the Lord to bless and protect our children during the upcoming school year, both on and off campus, is both necessary and appropriate, as it sets aside a special day during the year for the Virgin Islands to unify and heal itself by participating in prayer.
On Day of the V.I. Father’s March, we recognize the importance of parents, especially fathers, in their efforts to support their children in their educational pursuits. On this day, fathers throughout the territory are encouraged to accompany their children to campus on the first day of school as a show of their love and guidance in helping build a foundation for their future years. There is no single factor that ensures the success of children in school more than the support of parents.
We want to make our schools safe and peaceful learning environments, and make clear that Virgin Islanders will never tolerate excessive and senseless acts of violence to our students, teachers and other education officials.
These designated days remind us all to recognize that safety in our homes, in our schools, and in our streets, as well as freedom from the fear of violence are important to residents and visitors to the Virgin Islands.
Governor de Jongh asks the territory’s fathers to march to school with their children on the first day of school and commit to being responsible and doing whatever is possible to advance their children’s educations during the 2011-2012 school year.
