V.I. Answer Desk: Big Plans in Store for Raphune Hill Road Intersection

Source readers Maria and Paul Fereras want to know when the dividing lines on Raphune Hill Road at the Wheatley Center intersection will be repainted, so drivers stay in the proper lane.

Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls explained this week that the lines won’t be repainted at this time. However, he has better news.

Smalls says DPW is finalizing the execution of a contract to begin widening Raphune Hill Road above the Wheatley Center intersection. That will include removing what old-timers refer to as the "Dudley wall" in back of the Pizza Hut, Smalls says.

When the widening is completed, the left-hand turn lane will extend up to the Wheatley Plaza Road, eliminating the bottleneck that creates the present traffic backups while leaving the other lane clear for traffic going straight or turning right.

This is a separate contract unto itself, Smalls stressed, just for this part of the Long Bay project.. He said he hopes to see the start of the work within the next 30 to 60 days
