DHPR Announces Applications Available for Summer Sports Camps

The Department of Housing, Parks and Recreation today outlined its plans for the 2011 Annual Summer Sports Camps for the territory, as scheduled to be conducted from June 27 through Aug. 5. There will be a total of 23 sports camps and two sports clinics for participants to receive skills training in one or more sports, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the DHPR.
“The camps are designed for children with a true interest in a variety of sports and recreational activities and are open to boys and girls, ages 7-15. DHPR’s goals for the camps are to ensure a fun, safe, healthy, well-organized and well-supervised program for all children, to create an enjoyable learning environment, to help participants achieve a positive self-image and encourage creativity, a sense of learning and respect for others,” Commissioner St. Claire N. Williams said.
The department encourages early registration for the summer sports camp programs given their popularity because space is limited. Applications can be obtained on St. Croix at the department’s LBJ Gardens’ main office, D. C. Canegata Recreation Center, Renholdt Jackson Recreation Complex and the Vincent Mason Sr. Pool in Frederiksted. On St. Thomas, applications can be obtained at the department’s main office in Sub Base, Winston Raymo Recreation Center and Alvin McBean Recreation Complex. On St. John, they can be obtained at the Cruz Bay Recreation Center.
For more information, contact the department’s main offices in the respective districts at 774-0255 or 773-0160.
