Educational Complex Student Wins $25,000 Discover Scholarship

Discover Financial Services has announced that Gerhard Steven, a St. Croix Educational Complex High School student, is one of 10 winners of a 2011 Discover Scholarship Award and will receive a $25,000 scholarship.
“This scholarship felt like life gave me my first paycheck in the name of my hard work and this blessing has shown me there are no limits based on my location or any other aspect,” said Steven.
Winners are selected based on overall excellence in the areas of leadership and community service while successfully overcoming a hardship or challenge. All winners maintained at least a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average to qualify.
David Nelms, chairman and chief executive officer of Discover Financial Services, said, “This year marks the 20th anniversary of our program, which has had a positive impact on the lives of thousands of young adults. We are proud of our winners and the contributions they make in their communities.”
Since the inception of the Discover Scholarship Award, it has awarded scholarships totaling more than $16 million to nearly 6,500 students. Once the student graduates from high school, scholarship funds may be applied to costs for college, university, specialized training or education beyond high school.
